Boeing 747-100
The 747-100 changed the world when it entered service with Pan Am in 1970, the first "jumbo jet" and more than twice the size of any airliner before it. Its sheer capacity slashed the cost per seat and put long-haul travel within reach of ordinary people, opening the age of mass international tourism. The distinctive humped upper deck, born of a design meant to convert easily to freight, made it the most recognisable aircraft in the sky.
