Boeing 727-100
Launched in 1963, the 727 was Boeing's answer to the shorter US domestic routes the 707 was too big for, and it became one of the most important airliners ever. Its three tail-mounted engines and remarkable triple-slotted flaps let it operate from short, hot and high-altitude runways that other jets couldn't touch, bringing jet service to smaller cities. The original 727-100 seated around 130 and sold in huge numbers through the 1960s.
