Boeing 727-200
Launched in 1963 as US domestic travel was booming, the 727's three tail-mounted engines and advanced flaps let it serve the shorter, high-altitude runways the first jets couldn't reach, bringing jet service to smaller cities. The stretched 727-200 seated up to 189 and became the best-selling jetliner of its era with over 1,800 built. It was a fixture of American skies into the 1980s, and its distinctive shape defined domestic flying for a generation.
