Boeing 747SP
The 747SP ("Special Performance") of 1976 was a shortened, lightened jumbo built to fly farther than any airliner of its day, opening ultra-long routes like New York–Tokyo nonstop. Trading capacity for range, it let carriers like Pan Am and South African Airways reach markets no other aircraft could serve nonstop. Rare and distinctive with its stubby fuselage, only 45 were built, but it proved the ultra-long-haul concept the industry would later chase.
