McDonnell Douglas MD-81
The MD-81 of 1980 launched the MD-80 series, a modernised and stretched evolution of the DC-9 with a longer fuselage, refined wing and quieter engines. Seating around 140–170, it became a hugely popular single-aisle jet for US carriers through the 1980s and 1990s. It carried the DC-9 lineage into a new generation and sold in the many hundreds.
