McDonnell Douglas DC-8-61
The DC-8-61 of 1966 was the first of the "Super Sixty" stretches, lengthening the fuselage dramatically to seat up to 260 for high-density domestic routes. This move gave the DC-8 a capacity advantage the 707 could not match, revitalising the line in the late 1960s. It proved the value of stretching an existing airframe — a lesson the whole industry would follow.
